PAULA ON THE ROAD

Fotos de mis distintos viajes… Algunas de ellas con las personas a las que quería retratar…

Pictures from various trips… Some of them with the people I wanted to portrait…

I know, not my best profile pictures but, hey, what can you do when it is 40ºC, your suitcase is lost and you urgently need a shower… In any case, if I was better looking I would probably be on the other side of the camara, so instead of taking 100 pictures of people and one of me, it would be exactly the reverse… Very boring!

Sikkim, India, 2008. "Om many padme hum", practising mantras on the way... Sikkim, India, 2008. One afternoon, walking by myself in the fog, I got completely lost. The first person I met was this monk, who asked me what I was looking for. "I am looking for the orphanage on the road, but I am lost". "Why do you want to go there?". After a few minutes conversation, it turned out that Yongda, the monk, was the founder of the orphanage and one of the head lamas of the largest monastery in Sikkim. I spent one day with him, and learnt that he had moved from a military career into being a monk. Yongda had been the aid of chamber of the last king of Sikkim. When it became part of India he asked the king permission to join the monastery. Yongda was amazingly well-read. travelled, and had an amazing conversation.
